Transferring information of elevation from a mesh file to a CAD file

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I want to transfer the information of the elevations of a mesh to a CAD file. What would be the easiest way to do it?
This is the workflow as I did it so far: Load the dxf-file --> Convert CAD to 2D Scatter --> Scatter to Interpolate to Mesh (Map Z) --> Scatter to 2D Mesh. Is it okay? Also if you notice the contour legend it looks very weird (- values).

Are you converting CAD to Mesh or Mesh to CAD? Because at first it sounds like you're converting Mesh to CAD, but then you start with a .dxf, which is a CAD file. If you're trying to take the CAD and convert it to a Mesh, your work flow is okay, except that it looks like the 2D Scatter only preserved X and Y.

If you have a CAD program, I would try to open the .dxf there and see if you can export the values in a .txt or .xyz format. I think that might make keeping track of the elevations easier.

Thank you for your answer!

Yes I'm trying to take the CAD and convert it to a Mesh. The only problem is that my CAD file has the X & Y coordinates & I want it to take the Z value of the mesh which is originally there at first.

Ohhh, okay. Thanks for the clarification.

I'm not sure how to handle that. Off the top of my head, I would try to export the X & Y as a .txt from CAD and the Z values as a .txt from GMS and then try to combine them using Excel or Notepad or something. Of course, if you have a lot of points that's not really an appealing solution. And I'm not even certain you could match them. Maybe if you imported the X & Y values into a separate mesh you could match them. You can copy and paste values into the Edit Dataset Values dialogue box that comes up when you right-click on the dataset and select 'View Values', so you could copy the Z values from the existing mesh over to the mesh from CAD if GMS numbers all the points the same way.
