converting DXF bathymetry to scatter data

I assume you are familiar with the tutorial on the Aquaveo webpage, Scattered Data Sets. In step 8, it highlights how to convert DXF files to scatter data. You may notice that when you import stmary.dxf (found in the zipped folder associated with the tutorial) you can right-click on "stmary.dxf" and select "Convert --> ". From here there are three options.

  1. CAD --> Map
  2. CAD --> 2D Scatter Triangles
  3. CAD --> 2D Scatter

In answer to your question, you can convert directly from CAD data to scatter points, but it will give you a different result then going from Cad --> Map --> Scatter. For this tutorial, the difference is converting straight to scatter data allows you to keep the z (elevation) values stored in the CAD data but you lose the breaklines, and converting the CAD data first to a map then to scatter allows you to maintain the contour breaklines but lose the elevation values.
