SED2D Drying elements

Hi

I'm a relatively new user of RMA2 and SED2D, looking at flow and sedimentation in a harbour that is subject to tidal fluctuations in water level.

The RMA2 model runs fine and we are getting sensible results, even during the drying and wetting cycles. The RMA2 simulation starts at high tide, so as the tide ebbs, the water level drops and elements become dry.

The trouble arises when the SED2D model is performed on the RMA2 geometry and flow field. The first few time steps (time step = 0.25 hr for a 12 hour tide cycle) complete but SED2D stops at the time step when the first elements become dry.

The output file reads something like the following, which suggests that the SED2D simulation stops when the water depth at any node reaches zero.

...NUMBER OF EQUATIONS IS 2132.....

BUFFER BLOCKS WRITTEN = 0, MAXIMUM FRONT WIDTH = 86

STOP in subroutine BEDSUR

The offending nodes are:

Is anyone able to shed some light on this subject, and what techniques there are to get around this problem.
