Bruce,

Here is the response that the bug report received from the developers. Hopefully this will clarify it:

When I Map -> MODFLOW I get the following error:

"The SFR2 arcs with the following ids have more than one downstream SFR2 arc that is not marked as a diversion. OUTSEG will be set to the value of the first encountered stream segment: 1868, 1604, 762, 1961, 4212, 2284, 3377, 2623, 3898, 3082, 4833, 5371, 6753, 6382, 6382, 3484, 4604, 6721, 5143, 2472, 3574, 3304, 4071, 4676, 2562, 2742, 5421, 6096, 4367, 2036, 1438, 3433, 2827, 3171, 3347, 3136, 99, 2919, 3983, 3999, 6743, 5770, 3421, 4230, 2117, 1789, 4229, 2995, 3062, 3337, 3647, 3747, 3859, 6428, 5963, 4371, 4042, 3707, 6398, 2820, 4315, 5717, 3222, 2939, 3516, 3190, 6423, 6131, 4253, 4280, 2653, 2856, 1242, 3095, 4518, 5779, 4272, 5966, 4974, 4549, 5820, 4691, 6553, 2122, 2735, 6401, 5179, 5799, 4832, 4835, 4904, 6372, 3614, 6024, 2650, 6314, 3106, 2127, 3045, 3905, 6267, 4700, 3752, 2278, 4523, 759, 1368, 276, 1746, 589, 1174, 322, 1627, 1533"

I thought maybe the coverage was from a shapefile and shapefiles are notoriously dirty so I cleaned the coverage. After that I tried Map -> MODFLOW again and got this error:

"Unable to number stream segments. The following arc IDs are part of a loop and can't be numbered: 1151, 2393, 3498, 3499, 4155, 4712, 5521, 7144, 7147, 7148, 7149, 7150, 7151, 7154, 7155, 7156, 7157, 7158, 7159, 7160, 7161, 7162, 7163, 7164, 7165, 7166, 7167, 7168, 7169, 7170, 7171, 7172, 7173, 7174, 7175."

I think the problem is that the topology on this complex stream network is messed up, not that there's a bug in GMS.

Hi -- I went through this process, too. Cleaned up the arcs, got them all pointed downstream, deleted lots of short ones, etc. Did not do me any good. Sent the files in to the GMS developers and they wrote me back (a month or so ago) that there was bug but I never heard anything else. Was hoping that it was fixed in the latest release.

Hi Alan -- There's plenty of confusion on my end, too. I'm in the process of putting the files on your FTP site: "Chest39_NWT3.zip". If you could take a look, I would appreciate it.

Looking back through the files, I'm still getting some type of "outseg" error on one arc in the SFR2 coverage when I run the "map to modflow" command. I can remember doing everything I could think of to fix it, from deleteing it and redrawing it to checking the flow directions of all of the arcs around it. I fixed hundreds of these types of errors in the coverage but could not fix this last one for some reason. I get an error when I try to run MODFLOW that says: SEGMENTS MUST BE IN ORDER FROM 1 THROUGH NSS.

Any insight would be appreciated.
