Groundwater Age Dates - Calibration (ADV2 Package)

Could you give some more information on your idea here and how you use the age dates when calibrating?

Hi Alan -- I'm working on a MODFLOW model in GMS of a county size area (about 1000 mi2) with an 11 well - wellfield used for public water supply for most of the county - it's a very rural county!. Some of the wells are contaminated with a soil fumigant that was applied up to about 1980 but it is traveling in the groundwater at the same velocity. We have a series of water-quality samples from the wells over time, the installtion and pumping history of the well field, but no knowledge of the locations and application history of the fumigant. We have chloroflorocarbon (CFC) age dates on the groundwater discharging from the wells and I have been using the model, along with MODPATH, to track the water back to it's recharge points and see how old this is. I've been hand calibrating the HK and porosity values to attempt to match the ages dates. Would be nice to be able to put this into PEST and see what it could do but that's well beyond my limited programming ability. Don't know if you ever thought about including this in GMS but it would be a nice feature.

Thanks for the explanation. I think that the ADV2 package in MODFLOW might be able to do what you are looking for.

We will consider this feature request to be implementing the ADV2 package (unless it doesn't look like it would solve this problem for you) for use with PEST.

Is there another way or package which also considers dispersion besides advection (age mass transport) to use groundwater age dating in the calibration process or generally results in groundwater ages values for whole system?
