  1. Hi folks I have been trying to make a simple streamtube model to try and replicate tracer data results from the field in GMS. I have set up the MODFLOW model with no-flow boundaries on the side and prescribed head boundaries at each end. Then I have set up an MT3DMS model with an injection well with the tracer. I have then tried to match the breakthrough curve from MT3DMS with the measured tracer data, with the final goal of calibrating the model so that the observed and modeled data has the best fit. I have entered an observation point with the tracer data imported using the conceptual model coverage method. After simulation, the observation point and the modeled tracer data seem to be somewhat connected. The interval illustration is shown and is faded in periods where the model time is outside the measuring period. However, I am not getting any results, and the interval illustration seems to be 0 for the entire period. When I try to plot the computed data vs. the observed, it seems to take the computed data as both computed and observed, giving a 45-degree straight-line plot. Is it because the observation data is a point while the computed data is a cell, or is it another problem? Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards, Nicolai
  2. I have been trying to create a groundwater contour animation in GMS. It seems to work well for short duration timeseries of 300 stress periods, but when I try to create an animation of 3,000 stress periods, the animation seems to be created properly in GMS, but when I play the video, it is all scrambled and garbled. Is there a limit to the number of stress periods that you can use to create an animation?

Dear all, I am trying to model a “subsurface dam” using the Horizontal Flow Barrier (HFB) package which simulates thin low-permeability geologic features to impede the horizontal flow of groundwater. I have a model with two alluvium layers which are shown in the attached schematic figure. In the HFB package, the cell boundary represents a vertical face between two adjacent cells. The question here is how I can define a barrier within one cell (layer) up to a specific level rather than the whole cell thickness (like layer 1 in the figure). Your help and insight would be highly appreciated. Best regards,

Dear all I have trouble modeling a square site with different BC. at one side I have river (I put constant head as BC) and no problem in that for modeling. now, 1) at one side I have rock (no flow coming in or out from site at this side) and 2) at other side of square area I have no BC (I mean the water can flow out of area etc) what is the difference in modeling number 1 and 2? how to difine them in my model? my model currently have active cells in coverage so I think it means all sides I have rock, right?   5. We are about to start a 3D dam seepage model. We have done several similar models over the last few years in a finite element, unstructured mesh model code similar to FEMWATER. This time, we've decided to start with a MODFLOW model due to funding and scheduling issues. I've been wondering if a MODFLOW-USG model will meet our needs, and eliminate the need to switch to an FEM model sometime in the future. I took a MODFLOW-USG class several years ago, and have been looking for an opportunity to use it, but have not stayed up to date with the current condition of the interface in GMS. I've done a little testing over the last few days, and I see two possible hindrances. I think I've got workarounds for both, but wanted to see if anyone else had additional ideas. 1. We definitely need to be able to look at a cross-section of the dam and show head contours on the cross-section. With a regular grid, this is straight forward as long as your cross-section is along a row or column. I don't see any cross-section cutter in the USG model. With an unstructured mesh, we are used to using the control key to select a line of elements to isolate. I do not see that that hotkey is available with an unstructured grid, but it looks like we can select and isolate a group of cells and get a similar effect - either draw a box or select with a polygon. Is that our best bet? 2. Once we have the model solution, we compute a factor of safety against uplift at all the surface nodes in the FEM model - basically we need the gradient for upward flow. We have an external code that will automatically do this for an unstructured mesh by comparing heads and elevations at nodes located at the same x,y location. If we use a regular structured gridded MODFLOW, the computation is pretty trivial using the MODFLOW arrays for the centroid elevations and computed heads and the data calculator. I am not finding the same options in the unstructured grid. I realize that the grid is not required to have layers and that the computational points are not necessarily at exactly the same x,y locations, but it seems that the only way to build the unstructured grid in GMS is with layers, so if you're using the GMS interface, it's likely a layered USG. At this point, I'm thinking writing an external code or maybe an excel macro may be my only option here and I can probably steal code from the routine we use on unstructured meshes. Is there anything I'm missing in the GMS interface that could help me here? Thanks for your advice.
  6. Hi there, When I want to map my conceptual model on UGrid (Unstructured Grid) , it works till 6% and then it shows the following error: "Boost. Geometry overlay invalid input exception" I stuck in this step and I need your precious help. Any points would be highly appreciated. Many thanks in advance for your time and help.
  7. Hello Dear Alan and GMS Users, I’ve prepared boreholes, cross section and stratigraphy solids using GMS Version 10.4. I created first 2D Quadtree UGrid and then I selected Horizons -> UGrid from Borehole menu to map Horizons (Solids) to the 3D UGrid (Quadtree). I faced the following error and I cannot figure out how I can solve the problem: “No dataset defined for scatter set Horizons. Cannot continue” Your prompt help and response would be highly appreciated.

  10. I set up a new color ramp for contouring. I want to show drawdown values: blue for positive values, red for negative values and white to zero value. Is it possible to assign no color to the zero values so that I can see the raster map under the contouring layer? My workaround was to save GMS project to image file, open it in Quantum GIS and set the transparent color to white. Thank you Daniele
  11. Hey all! I have a question regarding boundary condition set up. I am working on a regional model of an large aquifer field which is used for drinking water purposes. Hydrologic and hydrogeologic conditions are at this stage of the research verry clear. We are dealing with open aquifer field where boundary condition is representing inflow to the aquifer from surrounding sedimentary formations. We have calculated the infow using National groundwater recharge model and at this stage we have data of infow (Q [m^3/s]) for every cell of the boundary condition. Is it possible to calculate the needed hydraulic head in order to simulate the boundary conditions as constant head?

  15. Hi all, A bit of a simple question but I can't find the answer anywhere in the help files. I've been provided with some ARCGIS TIN's (.adf files within the TIN folder) and I'm struggling to import them into GMS. Is there a conversion that must be completed before this will work or am I missing something really simple as GMS just spits out errors at present. Thanks in advance M

Hello, I am struggling with exporting the river coverage to shapefile - mainly I want to export the nodes with its ID and the head stages to shapefile I do it in standard way: Export Coverage - and choosing the .shp extension. Then I can export arcs and point file (polygon no as my coverage doesnt contain any polygons). The shp with arcs is exported without any problem, but what I am mainly interested is the shapefile with points. That is created but it doesn' t contain any data. (it contains just the names of attributes, but under that novalue). Is there any problem? According to gms wiki, should be possible to export head stages of rivers. My aim is to export GMS ID of nodes of the coverage (to have the information of X, Y coordinate and GMS ID), so I thought exporting to shapefile would be the easiest way. Is there any other possibility how to export ID of the Nodes with its XY coordinates from coverage to some format that can be then easilly processed (e.g excel,?)   17. Currently you can not get cell to cell flow budgets with MODFLOW-USG. This is a feature that can really help troubleshoot problems and analyze if the model is behaving correctly. Any plans in providing this in MODFLOW-USG?

  19. Hi everyone, I am currently doing a project regarding in-situ chemical oxidation of BTEX using persulfate solution, and trying to use RT3D to represent the process. As reading the literature the reaction should be a pseudo 1st-order kinetic reaction model, but the only relevant option I found in the reaction package is the inst. aerobic degradation of BTEX which only offers oxygen as the electron acceptor. In this case, could someone familiar with the persulfate or other similar oxidation mechanisms tell how to construct the RT3D model? convert the persulfate concentration to an equivalent oxygen concentration? or should I try more options other than MODFLOW?   21. Hi all, I have come up with some errors when running the tute model of TUTE: MODFLOW – Generating Data from Solids that indicate “changing heads are below the bottom of cell xxx". It is so weird that a tute brings up a problem like this. Having read a thread in the forum suggesting to remove the BC of constant heads from the sources sinks coverage, I found many cells dry out with red triangular flags after a modflow run. I knew it was different from what is instructed in the tute sheet, but it seems plausible for me that without those BC these cells could dry out. A further question is, i was constructing a more complex multi-layer solids model and tried to convert to modflow. My BCs are constant heads set on the arc of the coverage boundary, kind of surrounding my small catchment of interest, and they are definitely all below the bottom of my first, second and part of the third layer, so how to define the default layer range? (i.e. from 1 to 1, 3 to 12 as I have 12 layers in total, or 1 to 12?). PS: in this coverage I define wells, specific head, layer range for source sink and layer range for areal properties, and tick used for BC option. The first trial I have set was 1 to 12 (dont know if appropriate), converted map to modflow, and could see the blue dots assigned from layer1 to 12 of my conceptual model. All of them indicate the some heads I define in the coverage. (Really? Does it have to be a 58 m head in the even very bottom of my rock layer of 30 m elevation?). As expected, the model warned that lots of heads were below cells' bottom. When removing all of them in sources sinks and running the model in steady state, I found it never converge. A feeling was that I did it wrong when defining BCs. This is where I got confused. Could anyone kindly help? I am using GMS Version 10.0 Thanks for any help Rgds Dylan

  23. Just came up with a question regarding where to apply different solution schemes for the advection package activated in the MT3D or RT3D model, and the cases are based on the tutorials 1. Can someone please explain further why we choose the Standard finite difference method for both the Sequential anaerobic degradation and BTEX degradation with multiple electron acceptors, MMOC for the Rate-limited sorption reaction, MOC for both Instantaneous aerobic degradation and Double-Monod model, 3rd order TVD (ULTIMATE) for all MT3D tutorial cases, etc. If there were relevant recommended reading resources, that would be greater. 2. In the Rate-limited sorption reaction tute, what is the meaning of changing Max. number of cells any particle will be allowed to move per transport step to 2 in the Particle dialog of the Advection package? 3. How to save multiple solutions as a .rts file like what it supposed to import in the Rate-limited sorption reaction tute. Because each time I ran the model it would overwrite the existing solution with a new solution of both Aqueous and Soil given a certain mass transfer coefficient. How to come up with a solution with different runs (i.e. different mass transfer coef in one solution file? Thanks, Dylan
  24. I am a junior learner running through the general tutorials of MODFLOW, GMS and have come up with some confusion relating to the steps. 1. What happen to the right part of zone 3 with a constant recharge rate when importing csv file automatically matching zone name? The other zones are assigned correctly except for this part of zone 3. 2. In the tutorial it states the stress periods should match three changing point of recharge rate, i.e. 1/1/1986, 1/3/1986, 1/7/1986 (actually it is four including 1/10/1986). What is the purpose to set 1/5/1986, 1/6/1986 and 1/9/1986 etc. since no change takes place at these time? In addition, this should assume all the recharge polygons have the same changing points of rate over the space, so what if we have different change in time of these zones, say 1/3/1986 for zone 2 and 1/4/1986 for zone 3 etc. How to set stress periods for this scenario?
  25. Hi, I've been trying to calibrate my transient model using PEST, however I'm experiencing some difficulties. It executes the estimation process and finishes the parameter estimation but it fail's to give me any new values for the chosen parameters. This only happens when I try to calibrate it as a transient model. When I run it in steady state there are no problems and it estimates new values for my parameters. When I run it as a transient model there is a message in the PSLAVES windows that pops which states that the "Total sum of squared, weighted residuals: NaN", and I think the problems lies here. However I'm not sure how to fix it. If anyone has any idea what's causing this and could help me with a solution I would be very grateful. Jonas
