Export Vectors Into ArcMap

Recommended Posts

I would like to include the vectors into a ArcMap project. Is there a way to export the vectors into ArcMap? I know I can export the vectors to a *.dxf file but all of the vectors have hollow arrowheads.

Thanks,

Don

Don,

You can export the vectors as a shape file and then load that into ArcMap. To do this:

1) Turn off everything in the project explorer except for the vectors.

2) Select File | Save As

3) In the "Save as type" combo box select Shape Files.

4) Click Save

5) In the Export Shapefile dialog that appears select Feature Arcs -> Arc Shapefile and Feature Polygons -> Polygon Shapefile.

6) Select the files that were just saved and drag them into ArcMap.

Hi Erik

Very interesting, I've tried this many times, but doesn't work for me.

I load the vectors with the scalar values, turn everything off except the vectors and go to file and choose "save as" shape but I cannot select "feature polygon" it's greyed out. I can only save the mesh contours as a shape file.

I am working with SMS 10.1.5.

Thanks

Hi Erik:

I have the same problem as Chris24. Dialog box is grayed out. We are using v10.1.5 64bit.

Don

Just tried the new update v10.1.6 64bit. Still having the same problem.

@ Erik

your workaround to export the vectors just doesn't work! In which SMS version did you export the vectors in a shape file?

Thanks

I apologize for the incomplete steps. Here are the complete steps:

1) Whiles the vectors are displayed, right click in the white area in the project explorer and select Convert to CAD. This should create many cad layers, one of which should be a vectors CAD layer.

2) Right Click on CAD Data in the project explorer and select Convert | CAD to Map. This will create many layers in the map data, one of which will be of the vectors.

3) Go to File | Save As and change the file type to shape file.

4) Click save and then select arcs.

Note that the heads will be hollow. If you would like the heads to be filled then you can try going to Feature Objects | Build Polygons after the above step 2 and then in step four saving the polygon shape file as well. Creating a bunch of polygons may cause issues though.

Awesome! Thanks for this nice workaround!
