Algorithm for mesh generation

Hi,

I need to develop an algorithm to improve mesh generation for the

Finite Element Method to solve the Shallow Water Equations. It should

accommodate requirements of coastal areas and estuaries, to model in

detail the tide propagation. I will use SMS for the simulations.

Do you think is better I use Fortran or C++ as a programming language? Why?

The simple answer for the programming language is the one you know best.

Who is sponsoring the research? What numeric model are you going to be using? What types of meshes are you trying to build (quad, all tris, etc)? If it isn't proprietary, what basic concepts are you going to use to build better meshes? Like are you going to add refinement in areas of steep gradients, etc?

If you are working with a model like ADCIRC that uses all triangles, I think you get more results for your effort by developing algorithms for creating size functions and feed them into scalar density paving. This is the approach that has been followed with the LTEA tools for ADCIRC which performs a simplified run and generates a size function from the resulting truncation errors.

Please let us know the questions above. There might be ways we could work together beneficially.
