2D to 3D meshes

Recommended Posts

Hi. I am a new user.

I am currently using SMS9 and RMA10. I have a 2D mesh for RMA2 and I need to build the 3D mesh to use in RMA10.

I have 5 bathymetric data files with format .adf (but I do not have software to open it- I tried to use autocad and SMS to open it but it does not work).

Any user could give me some help on how to open/import/convert these files and prepare the 3d mesh starting from the 2d mesh?

thank you.

Lin,

SMS does not currently support RMA10 since the US Army Corps of Engineers has not yet released it for public use: "RMA10 is currently run at WES only. However arrangements may be made for CORPS field offices to serve as beta testers in a cooperative fashion with WES. RMA10 is not ready for public (non-CORPS) release." - see http://chl.erdc.usace.army.mil/chl.aspx?p=...ES;419&g=77

Ian King / Resource Modeling Associates has a separate version of RMA10. I believe Ian King's version of RMA10 will read .2dm files from SMS, but you should contact Resource Modeling Associates to verify this. I am also not sure how you would define the 3D layer information since a .2dm file is a 2D mesh file.

Could the .adf file be an ARC/INFO coverage data file (ArcView)?

Hi,

Thank you for your prompt answer.

These are bad news for me. If SMS does not support RMA10 it means i won´t be able to visualize the 3D mesh and the model results.

Anyway it seems that i will not even be able to build the 3d mesh .....

Do you suggest me any alternative software that i can use to build the 3D mesh with the data I have and an alternative 3D model for hydrodynamics? (I am modeling a reservoir).

I will try to find out what the *adf files are.

Lin,

If you would like to try using RMA10, you may want to consider contacting Ian King at Resource Modeling Associates. If you are an U.S. Army Corps employee, I would try contacting the Coastal Hydraulics Laboratory at WES.

ADCIRC has some 3D features (see http://www.nd.edu/~adcirc/features.htm) and an active user group from which you might be able to get some utilities for pre and post processing. SMS does not support the 3D features - I'm not sure how much you would have to manually modify the SMS generated files to use them in the 3D mode.
