Opposite change in fluctuation due to different conductivities

Dear all,

I am modelling a pair of extraction/injection wells and have noticed something very peculiar when varying the horizontal conductivity values of certain layers.

I have attached two pics to this post.

In my model, the top layer consists of 3 distinct layers which represent an aquitard (clay).

Extraction and injection is occurring in the lower 5th layer.

In the 2 figures the horizontal k-value for each of the top three layers are displayed.

The only difference between the two figures is that the middle layer's conductivity value has been changed from 0.01 to 5 m/d.

All layers have a vertical anisotropy of 1.

As can be observed in the figures, the one with the higher conductivty value for the middel layer (k = 5 m/d) gives a smaller change in head at the surface.

You can see the 0.05 m contour line staying beneath the surface.

In the other figure, both the 0.05 and 0.1 contours reach the surface implying a change in head by that amount at the surface.

It is logical that when you deal with aquitards less water can pass through this layer, yet in these figures the oppossite is true.

Can anyone explain this difference to me?
