error w/zonal classification

Recommended Posts

I read in a grid, and set current coords to be geographic (lat / lon) and depths in meters.

If I select a number of cells, I can get area / volume of them in proper units.

If I use zonal classification to, for example, create a polygon where the depth is below or above a certain value, and then check the 'area' of this polygon, it is clearly not correct. It is as if the area being reported is simply using lat / lon as the horizontal coords and interepreting those numbers as 'meters.'

Bug, perhaps?

Dave.

Thanks for pointing this out.

It is definitely a bug and I have put it into our bug system.

Until the fix is complete and available, you can open the coverage in another instance of SMS and build a mesh using paving. Select the elements and it will give you the area. I realize this isn't as nice as just being able to select the polygon and getting the value. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

Again, I appreciate your taking the time to report this.

The zonal tool also fails to capture a lot of regions that meet the criterion set. for example, I have a grid of the western Atlantic / caribbean. Water depths run from negative numbers (grid cells on land) to large positive numbers (deep water).

If I use the ZT to try and isolate shallow water (say where the depth is 0 - 200 m; basically the continental shelf) it works around the caribbean but fails to pick up the entire US shelf region. Bummer.

My grid is some 20MB if you want to see it yourself.

I would love to take a look so we can get the problem fixed. Follow the instructions below to upload the files for us to look at. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for reporting the issue.

FTP uploading instructions

1. Create a new folder with a unique name on your computer and copy all of your project files into it. (please zip up the folder)

2. Open windows explorer (My Computer).

3. Enter "ftp://pubftp.aquaveo.com" in the address bar.

4. (If the "Log On As" dialog box appears) check the box labeled "Log on anonymously" and click "Log On".

5. Copy the folder with your project files in it into the "incoming" folder.

6. Send an e-mail to support@aquaveo.com telling us the name of the folder you uploaded and exact steps taken to produce the problem.

*Please help us stay organized by putting all of your files in a single folder before you upload them. After you upload them, you will not be able to edit them.

It seemed to work okay. The attached picture was generated with the last posted version of SMS 10.1.10.

You may want to try the latest version if you aren't using this one already. If you use the latest version and it still doesn't work, let me know.

i just uploaded fort0k.zip. Good luck trying to figure out the problem.

You will need to contact our sales department to ask them about upgrading to see what the costs associated with that will be.

As far as downloading SMS 10.1, you can get that from our website here My link. You can obtain an evaluation password by selecting request evaluation license from the register window.

Our sales department email is sales@aquaveo.com and their phone number is 801-302-1400.
