Hi, I have successfully created a Modflow model and a MT3DS models and ran them to determine the groundwater flow field and constituent transport in the ground (figure blow is an example of a constituent plume). Model has 10 layers. This model domain is bounded by ocean from one side (red square). A separate hydrodynamic model is run for ocean currents and transport to determine the behavior of constituents that seeps to the ocean. My Modflow and MT3DS models are supposed to provide the constituent flux to the ocean (flow and constituent concentration). I would like to get the constituent flux from each of the model grid cells faces in the ocean side. Would you please let me know how to do this? Thank you, Lalith

    Found it. Right click on the 3D grid and export it as a shapefile. Now, open the shapefile using ArcGIS and export the attribute table as a txt or csv file or database as you wish.

    HI kpham89, You get concentrations at all cells at all times in the method Allen has described. I think you have confused the output method "from active dataset to values" with the method that Allen has mentioned. If you right click active dataset graph and select view values, then you only see values from ten cells. What Allen ask you to do is clicking on the active data set in MT3DS data set in the 3D grid, then right click, select view values, select output to text. I hope this is clear. I am, in fact, looking for bit more advanced output option than this. Please let me know if I can obtain the concentration fluxes though every face of cells. I put a more detailed request on this today in this form with the topic "Constituent across each cell face"
  5. Hi All, I would like to check the effectiveness of using canals to draining water into the ground with the gravity (opposite of drain) without using injection well. How do I model this in GMS modflow? Please let me know your suggestions. Thank you, Lalith

    Initial conditions to MT3DMS

    Hi, I have a set of measured Thiophenol concentration values. I can prepare a 3D plume of Thiophenol using 3D Geostatistics tool of GMS (in a 3D grid) in a new GMS project. However, I cannot make this 3D plume grid in an existing model set up that already has both modflow and MT3DMS models in the same region. When I prepare the plume as 3D Grid Data in the same model set up as in modflow and MT3DMS model, GMS requires to delete modflow and MT3DMS 3D grid. The reason why I want to prepare the 3D Thiophenol plume in the same set up as my modflow and MT3DMS model set is because I want to provide the above Thiophonol plume as the initial condition to the M3DMS model? How can I use “3D Data Set -> Grid…” option for this? Or, is my approach to this modeling initial conditions for MT3DMS correct? Please advise me? Any suggestion to resolve this situation is highly appreciated. Thank you, Lalith

    GMS crashing when trying to use MODPATH

    How many particles do you release? What is the grid resolution? Did you try this on simple grid model with few particles? Sometimes, complex grid and large number of particles cause this due to the lack of RAM and processing power.

    Hi Allan, I found a bug in modpath. I released particles from the cell faces (not on the water table surfaces). Then I deleted particle starting points that are above and below the screen levels. I just wanted to see the behavior of the particles released from screen levels. model worked fine. No problem. When I saved the model closed it and reopened it later, all particle paths are messed up. It looks like particle release locations are redistributed again on one side of the entire cell.     MT3DMS

    Hi, I am working on a MODFLOW and MT3DMS simulation set up. I have some constituent observations at different locations. I would like to create a 3D constituent plume using these observed data and use that 3D plume as the initial condition for MT3DMS model simulation. I am able to make the 3D constituent plume using these observed data with 3D Geostatistic methods. However, I don't know how to map this 3D plume to the MT3DSM grid as the initial condition. Would you please explain this to me? Thank you, Lalith

    I use both of these options all the time. I have had no issue. If you do not specify the screen, extraction would be taken place from the layer ranges specified. If you specify the screen levels, it would be taken from the cells that intersect within the screen levels.
  16. If you have refinement on, please check your "bias". reduce that number. you can get rid of them. However that might results in a higher resolution grid, which might lead to higher computational times

    Curve Number

    Hi, I am trying to calculate curve number for a watershed using soil type and land use data. I am required to use watershed boundary, longest flowpath and drainage point shapefiles from another program. I also have GIS shapefile of soil type and land use. First I made the drainage coverage and projected watershed boundaries, longest flowpath and drainage point shapefiles. created the polygons and calculated basin data. Then I tried to calculate the CN using soil and landuse shapefiles. I used a land use table created by me using the soil and land use data. Please see the attached document for more details. However, my CN calculation provide me an empty output with the following message on it.     CAD, layers and cross sections

    Hi, I have an inherited a GMS modflow model where properties of soils are defined as layers (not as solids). Each layer has several different zones (areas) with different soil characteristics, such as hydraulic conductivity. My client need few different types of outputs. Would you please let me know if they are possible? The required outputs are as follows. 1. Cross section (other than front and side views) showing layers only (not all model grids) and preferably color each zone of different soil types within each layer with different colors. 2. Can the output in 1 be exported to AutoCAD or ArcGIS in 3D? 3. Can the capture zone of each layer due to extraction well be separately output as shapefiles or AutoCAD in 3D? 4.     Hi, I have a GMS modflow model. I need to see how effective an infiltration gallery in this modeling domain. If you have modeled infiltration filters using GMS, would you please direct/help me on how to do that? Directing me to any study resources are also appreciated.   20. Hi, I am fairly new to GMS and modflow. My apology if this feature already exists. Would you please add a feature to batch export GIS shapefiles of particle tracking pathlines in GMS? For example, I have a modflow model that has several extraction wells (16). I ran modpath for tracking particles for different time periods (8 different times) and created GIS shapefiles (16 x 8 = 128). I was able to export these GIS shapefiles only one by one This is a repetitive, time consuming and tedious work. If there a way to export all of these or selected shapefiles in one attempt (such as batch export), that would make our lives much easier. Thank you, Lalith

    This happened to me as well. My understanding is that this takes up lots of RAM if you create a large number of particles. I would start with total of 20 or 30 particles for entire simulation and increase gradually. That worked for me.

    mapping solids to a 3D grid

    Hi, I have built 3D solids using borehole data of quite complex geology. It has so many layers of soil types. However, I do not feel that I should assign layers for each soil type because it will make too many layers to analyze. Should I?. Also, some soil layers do not run across the entire domain. I was thinking these solids should be mapped to a 3D grid with three or four layers with similar hydrogeological characteristics. Can someone please guide me how I should map these data to a 3D grid modflow grid with few layers? Am I going in the proper direction in modeling this? Thank you, Lalith
  23. Hi, I have a multilayer (9 layers) GMS modflow model. I need to select cells within a rectangle area in only three layers (say layers 3,4, and 5) to run modpath and provide these loacations as starting locations for forward particle tracking. Would you please let me know how to do this? I also noticed that, selecting all the cells within the rectangle area also selects lots of cells and running forward tracking hangs the computer. Therefore, I made set of points spaced apart farther than cell dimensions so I can use the option "intersecting objects". Can I select intersecting cells of these points within the rectangle and within only 3 layers? Please let me know. I appreciate your help. Lalith
  24. Hi, I am trying to set up a groundwater model. I have DEM data that covers a large area (these are less accurate). In addition, I have more accurate measured ground surface elevation data (in X, Y and Z form) at several locations of interest given the discharge and pumping activities at these locations. There are observed ground water elevations at these locations which are expected to be used in model calibration. I first used DEM data to establish ground elevation in the entire model domain and then imported the observed data at these locations of interest and interpolated in 2D. Problem is that ground surface elevations in entire modeling area changes when I load observed local data as 2D data set and interpolated. Since there are no observed data in the regions among observed data, ground elevation drastically changes to unrealistic values in the areas where there is no observation data. Simply, model remove elevations calculated from DEM and recalculate elevations based only using observed data. Please let me know how I can first use DEM data to generate ground surface elevations in my entire model and revise ground elevations only locally using measured data without changing ground elevations in the entire domain.
