  1. I get a message about the scatter having disjointed vertices when running model. The mesh surface looks fine and the elevations are within the expected range. However, the water surface everywhere except right at the inlet gives an elevation of -999.0. I have a constant elevation as my downstream boundary condition and two peak flow inlets. I assume it must be a problem with the downstream boundary but no success yet. Any ideas from the experts? Thanks!

    Scatter Data question

I have a series of five scatter sets that are rather large and it is taking forever to merge them. I may need to thin the data out some. Any suggestions? Thanks, John

    Scatter Data question

What about utilizing multiple processor cores? Does SMS do that efficiently or is it better for the program to see the CPU as a single core? I'm considering upgrading my machine as I have several SMS models coming up with one in particular that will be quite large. Any hardware suggestions that you can make would be appreciated: Motherboard, Processor , RAM, etc. Thanks, John

    Scatter Data question

Thanks Cody. I'll give that a try. I have 32G of Ram. What do you guy recommend for handling these large datasets?

    Memory Issue

UPDATE: I was able to use the coordinates during the import process to reduce the data limits and everything came in fine!

    Memory Issue

Hello, I'm starting up a new SMS model and when I try to import the DEM, I get an error message that the machine does not have enough memory. However, this machine has 32GB of RAM and plenty of hard drive space. Same DEM loads fine into WMS... Is there another explanation? Thanks!
  7. Hello, I've had a similiar issue before but I'm stuck trying to import a contour shape file into WMS. I can import the data and the lines come through but the elevation data is not there. If I import the same data into SMS, I can create a scatter file (*.h5) but it won't read in to WMS. Any ideas? Thanks, John

    Importing Shapefile and scatter

As a follow-up I've attached a screen shot of the attribute table as read from ArcMap. When the shapefile is read into WMS the data in the "Contour Type" column is assigned to the elevations instead of the "elevation" column. How can I correct this? Thanks for your help! John ScreenShot.pdf

    Importing Shapefile and scatter

Thanks Chris but I have tried this and it appears that the elevation data is not being assigned correctly. I think there may be an additional column in the data that is being assigned the elevation incorrectly. I would upload the file but it is too big. Is my suspicion possible? Thanks, John

    Importing GIS Contours?

I'm building a fairly large WMS model that will use Dynamic HEC-RAS to model some bridge openings and do some pre and post floodplain delineation. I have a large dataset of 1 ft contours from the community that I would like to use to pull cross sections from as opposed to the course NED data. When I bring in the Contours, I see nothing. There is a similar shape file for bathemetry that comes in fine. Any thoughts?

    Presentation Graphics

Chris, In a previous post you mentioned the ability to export to various formats (ESRI, DWG, DXF, KMZ, etc) as well as the "copy to clipboard" command. I will be using Microstation to create a border for the exported graphics. I can get the graphic(flood impact map) with "copy to clipboard" but it is still quite grainy using a scale factor of 10. What would be a resonable scale factor? Trying the other route, the displayed flood impact map falls under the "TIN" data folder. When attempting to export this data via ArcInfo, the following message appears "You can only export a GRASS or ArcInfo ASCII grid from a dataset associated with a 2D grid." In the end, i need to create a flood impact maps for the existing and proposed conditions. These will be the shaded flood impact area over the aerial photo. Can you offer any other suggestions? Thanks, John

    Reading in HEC-RAS results

Thank you Chris! Looks like that step 2 did the trick. Seems obvious now that I know it is there. I'm sure I'll have more for you before this is all said and done. Thanks again for all your help and have a fantastic weekend! John

    Reading in HEC-RAS results

Are there any tricks to reading in HEC-RAS results? My model is an unsteady RAS model with over 100 cross sections. I'm following the process in the tutorial "Hydraulics and Floodplain Modeling - Floodplain Delineation" but when I initiate the read-in, it never comes. As a test I'm using the actual tutorial files to follow the example, and the data seemingly never comes. Should this process take a long time? I must be missing something....John

    Reading in HEC-RAS results

Thanks Chris. I think I tried this but will have another look. Does it matter where the HEC-RAS files reside, relative to the WMS files? When the read solution command is executed, it automatically opens up a RAS project file. It looks like that solution is the one that is read in no matter if I change and save. It always goes back to that original project file, which is located on another drive. I'll have another look but wanted to go ahead and get this addtional info out to you. Thanks again, John

    Reading in HEC-RAS results

Thanks Chris, Yes, unsteady wuith multiple plans, each with multiple profiles. I can't seem to control (or be sure which) project plan and profiles are read in. Also, Once I get this issue sorted I need to start developing some presentation quality displays of flood impact maps, etc. What is the best way to extact maximum resolution graphics from WMS for this purpose? Thanks for all the help....I'm in this deep....

    Reading in HEC-RAS results

As a follow-up, no matter where the RAS files are stored, or which project I select from the RAS menu when the "read solution" process is started, I get the same solution read in. This is confirmed by doing a conversion > impact map and subtracting one profile from another. The result is zero......I'll keep trying...

    Reading in HEC-RAS results

Thanks Chris....I see the transient data for the "one" simulation. However, the are multiple simulations within my one HEC-RAS project (existing and various proposed alternates). The "read solution" command only appear to read in one solution. If that is in fact the case, is it reading in the most recent plan data from RAS? I'm thinking I'll need a separate HECRAS project file for each solution. Can you confirm? Thanks, John

    Reading in HEC-RAS results

After restarting my machine, I'm able to read in the solution. Next question is when reading in multiple solutions from multiple plans in a single RAS Project, how do you distinguish which plan you are reading in? Must you create a stand alone RAS project for each solution? Thanks!

    Reading in HEC-RAS results

I should mention that I am using the just released update and I'm expecting to pull the "MaxWS" result for each cross section.

    Importing GIS Contours?

Thanks Chris, I did get this into a TIN but can only use linear contours because of the size. I have 32 GB of RAM and a Quadro 4000 video card and it is still killing my machine. What would you suggest I do with this data set to make more manageable? I have a SMS license as well and I'm looking at the available tools there. Thanks, John

    Importing GIS Contours?

Yes the password is Ogeechee Sorry about that. The line do drop in but I was not able to get it to a contoured tin. Let me know if goi are able too. Thank you!

    Importing GIS Contours?

Chris, I have been using a online source for my DEM/TIN information but I just recieved a GIS contour file from a new source. It is uploading to your ftp site now: SpringfieldContours.zip Please have a look to see if you are able to convert this into a TIN for use in WMS. Thanks! John

    Merging Sections

Chris, I'm making progress on this model, which has over 100 cross sections. The sections are created with the DEM and then "merged" with channel data. I'm in the process of exporting everything out to RAS. When I do, some of the channel sections appear to have georeference issues. See the attached plot. I merged each section the same way and they do not all have the same problem. Can you tell me what causes this and direct me as to how to fix it without recreating all of the cross sections? Thanks! John RASsrceen.pdf

    Merging Sections

Thanks Chris. As a follow-up, I think adding points is definitely a problem for the georeferencing. But I'm wondering if the moving of points to put the banks where I want them may be OK.....It looks like when a point is moved, it holds its X,Y and only adjusts the D and Z. While this means that these point may not be perfectly referenced, they are typically in a straight line so I'm thinking this may not matter. Would you agree?
